We went out to see if we could harvest branch lettuce this late in the season.
Like a lot of lettuces, it’s best early on, and even though we tried to pick the younger leaves, this batch turned out to be too tough to eat raw or cooked.
But we got a pretty bouquet out of the hike!

Our bee balm is growing in new places since last year’s hurricane. I love discovering patches of wildflowers in places they haven’t bloomed before, and these were going all out down in the roadside ditch in front of our property.
For this bouquet, I mixed in a little bit of mint from the patch I use for cooking. Of course, bee balm is a mint, too. Sometimes soon I need to make some bee balm tea.

And of course, when I set my bouquet on the deck so I could do something else for a moment, I saw this happening…

I’m pretty sure Pippi only loves bee balm for the hummingbirds it draws!
(And yes, I’m wondering how hard it would be to paint this pretty bouquet…)
