Coltsfoot Colony

Coltsfoot and Spicebush Rain Walk

We were on one of our ordinary ambles on the mountain in a light spring rain, and came across a beautiful colony of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) in full bloom. We also finally identified the gorgeous understory trees that are full of lime-green flowers (though no leaves yet) as Appalachian spicebush (Lindera benzoin)! I’ll soon be posting about making some tea with spicebush twigs, and hopefully this fall I’ll have some drupes/berries to try as well…
