Sunset date night

Date Night in Town

Sometimes we just get it all perfect.

The weather was beautiful, so we ate out back at one of our favorite local spots, Comeback Shack. We like the Shack because it’s local, the food is awesome, there’s more outside space than inside, and we order using a QR code and never have to interact with staff.

I got the chicken teriyaki sandwich with lettuce, mustard, mayo, teriyaki sauce, and a giant slab of grilled pineapple. And cheese fries, mmm.

Then we headed up to the gas station we call “Cowboy Doughnuts” for the nice man in the Stetson who used to work there, plus the outstanding doughnuts in the display case by the door. (This gas station appears in a poem called “Filling Stations,” which you can read at this link.)

Cowboy Doughnuts is kind of across the road from a house that used to be a local fruit and vegetable stand, then an antiques place, and now sells boba tea and does tattoos. (This is a true story.)

For some reason, they painted this “Drem Big” sign on the house, and it still makes us laugh. We remind each other to double-check the spelling of any tattoo we get there.

After we left Cowboy Doughnuts, we carried our treats up to the local community college and sat out on the hood of the car to watch the sun set over the mountains, along with the ten or twelve other cars, mostly full of students, doing the same.

I love this spot so much that I painted it not too long ago, and I love the painting, too. I may paint it again.

What, I ask you, could be better than this?

We do good date nights.
