Hickory nut and yellow jellies

First Blooms of 2024

I have been (not very patiently) waiting.

And today I had a long good hike. I took my time, lengths and lengths of time, letting it unspool in wide sky-blue swaths as I made my way up and around my winter-soggy trails. I stopped to scuff under the leaf layers looking for earthstars, salamanders, nuts, twigs, shells, bones, jellies, or whatever could be found. I happily inspected every rocky shelf and steep stretch and wet seep.

I did notice that the dandelion greens were almost big enough to harvest, but was even happier to find a single spring beauty in bloom. I almost forgot to take a photo before I ate it!

I could have also eaten this cutleaf toothwort, but decided to wait until there were enough for a good bowl of salad.

Finally, here are the first daffodils in bloom on the mountain! They were a sunny delight to find. Soon there will be so many more.
