Gathering Ground

This week I did something I’ve never done before.

I had a full-sheet painting that simply wasn’t working. Instead of painting over it, I took a deep breath…and cut away nearly a third of it.

Then something unexpected happened.

The remaining landscape came alive.

I slipped into the same creative place that gave birth to my Secret Atlas collection, cutting and rearranging pieces until twelve entirely new paintings emerged. Each one feels complete—a small world of mountain, earth, sky, layers of handmade mark-making, and even fragments of my poem Sanctuary hidden beneath the surface.

The result is one work made of twelve original paintings.

It reminds me that sometimes making art—and maybe life—requires enough courage to let go of what isn’t working so you can finally see what was there all along.

I’ll be sharing these for the first time this Saturday, August 1, 2026 at my art show in Boone, NC.
