Everywhere the orange daylilies are in bloom. Ours are the old variety, Hemerocallis fulva, nothing hybrid or advanced or cultivated. Just plain old “ditch flowers”, which I couldn’t love more.
Today I was out on the mountain and decided I needed a handful of daylily flower buds for my lunchtime salad. If I had thought of it sooner, I would also have gathered some basswood leaves, maybe some woodland stonecrop to add to my plate.
But I didn’t even remember to look for Sarvis, or serviceberries, which should be here by now.

So daylilies were all I had, and they were perfectly sufficient! I tend to prefer the buds on the day before they open, although the open flowers are also perfectly good in salads, too.

A note on H. fulva: once in a while I find daylily blooms to have a mild laxative effect. However, most of the time that doesn’t happen, and I don’t consume lots of them at once.
Oh, and here’s Beezus, and a photo of a ramp flowerhead — ramps are in bloom all over the mountain right now, too.
