Pink hepatica

Hepatica, Dekay’s Brown Snake, Puffball & Pippi

I went out looking for skunk cabbage, but didn’t see any of the purple spathes I like to photograph. However, I did see this pretty Dekay’s Brownsnake, and after admiring her for a while, I went to pick her up and she took issue with me, ha. So I apologized, and only took her photo.

Pippi missed all the drama, because she was rolling in the leaves. It wasn’t actually much drama, so…

Also in the woods today were this pretty common puffball mushroom, and a lovely sharp-lobed hepatica in bloom.

  1. Oh what a pretty snake. And the puffball and hepatica too…a perfect day in the woods, sounds like. Here, it has been so wild that going out would not have been a pleasant or safe thing to do, with the wind, hail, rain, etc.

We are definitely having beautiful spring days mixed with crazy days with snow & sleet, but this was one of the beautiful ones! I’ll be VERY happy to see the snow days end, but we can’t count on it until at least after Mother’s Day in May.

You are a couple of weeks ahead of us, but soon we will be sharing those delights with you. Lungwort is already in bloom here.

Where are you located, David? I love watching spring creep up the mountains here. A few miles from our house is a mountain we frequently climb, and even though it’s nearby, the trailhead is a thousand feet above the altitude at our house. The summit is another thousand feet up from the trailhead. Driving up, then climbing up is like time travelling, about 2 weeks for every thousand feet of altitude!
