Larkspur & More Larkspur

Some years it goes this way.

I saw very little bloodroot this spring, but by golly there’s larkspur in buckets, more than I have seen before on this mountain.

Larkspur (or “purple elephant flower”, as Lance calls it) does just fine in the partial shade it still has in the understory; the trees are beginning to leaf out some, but the woods are still very dappled.

And even though there’s larkspur everywhere in the woods right now, this particular spot up at the top of our East ridge, just under one of our enormous border trees, seems to be where our larkspur loves it most.

I wish the photo was better; I keep wanting to say “You gotta be here.” I promise you, there’s lots of this lovely wildflower, and it is a sheer purple pleasure.
