Spring head daffodils just beginning to bloom

My Foraging Bucket Didn’t Come Home Empty

I have been eagerly waiting for a good wild March salad.

So far, what I’ve gotten is a few trail nibbles; previews of coming attractions. The first violets are still far too tiny, but I’m eating spring beauties when I see them (and there aren’t many yet), a toothwort here and there, and today I found the ramps, the ramps, the ramps!

The ramps are only a few inches high at most, but it won’t be long before I give in to temptation and dig up a handful. For now I let them be.

Before heading home I hiked up to the spring head to see if the daffodils up there had begun to bloom, and finally I had something to put in my bucket!

These had not quite opened up, but they will in a day or so. Even so, they are a joy to see.
