Pearl Crescent Butterfly & Tiny Offerings

We have so many little orange and black butterflies here; I had been calling them all fritillaries. But even though they are very similar (to me, anyway), there are Pearl Crescents mixed in there, too. Probably others as well.

But it’s important to know at least one true name of a creature, and I try to do that as a courtesy.

So hello, tiny Pearl Crescent.

You look as if you’ve had quite the journey. We have plenty of asters coming up for you to lay your eggs on, and the milkweed blooms are also on their way. Hope you’re finding plenty of nectar and green good places to rest so far this summer.

Finally, a small stump offering for my day’s walk on the mountain with a fresh, not-yet-uncurled leaf of Rumex, a couple of maple samaras, and some buttercups.

I found that little-bitty pitcher (sized for a doll’s house) in the rubble from a campfire a couple of years ago. I’m amazed that it’s lasted on that stump for so long. Every big storm blows it off, but I still keep finding it again.
