Poplars, Witch Hazel, & Late Haws

It isn’t only the maples that are gorgeous and golden right now; the tulip poplars and the witch hazels are contributing plenty of sunny yellows and lime greens to the show as well.

I went out on the mountain to see what I could see, and found the last of the hawthorn berries (haws) still on the tree. I collected a handful, ate a few, and left the rest on this stump with some poplar leaves.

I also hiked out to our best-bearing spicebush tree, but I have absolutely missed my chance to harvest spice berries this year. The birds got every last one. Here’s a photo of when they were green, back in September:

Oh well! Maybe next year.

And for all of you waiting for the snapping witch hazel to begin pelting seeds at random woods-walkers (like me), I check them every day or two, but they still aren’t opening yet. Soon!

And last but definitely not least, here’s Pippi!
