Watermelon Wildflower Salad

I had to be careful picking jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) flowers today because the bees were out in force. A flower that already has a visitor or resident of any sort, I try to leave alone.

I only ended up accidentally bringing in one visitor — a tiny spider — who dashed off before I could safely transport her back outside. She’s welcome to live in the kitchen for a while, until one or both of us manages to get her back out to the mountain.

And while I was only planning to gather jewelweed today, I couldn’t resist the pretty blue commelina (Commelina communis) flowers, so my watermelon has even more lovely accompaniment.

I mean, if you could eat a bowl of wildflowers with your late-summer watermelon, why wouldn’t you?
