Some days, all you can do is draw three sticks.
Not the good days, on those days everything flows.
On stick days, it’s just about as much as one human can do to walk out on the deck in the rain, pick up three windblown bits, and bring them in again. So much effort, just that one small thing.
On those days, make yourself pick up the pen. Hell, it’s just wet, busted sticks. Who cares if they’re, I don’t know, accurate? Representational?

Truth is, no matter what you do with your pen, they are representational. It’s wet stick day, and everybody has them.
Give them a little ink, then a little watercolor. You might actually give them more than they had originally. Some green, where there’s really only gray. Some magenta? Why not.

Now you’re making art. It’s stick art day. Maybe that makes you smile. And that’s enough.
Because some days, all you can do is draw three sticks.
What a perfect and timely essay, Lisa.
Thank you. I know I’m not the only one who has those days, so I am grateful if it struck a chord for you as well.
