Summers at Pickwick

My aunt and uncle visited recently, and with them came a flood of memories of summers spent with my Grandaddy Scharff on his boat on Pickwick Lake.

Learning to water-ski. Swimming and jumping off waterfalls. Lazing on the water all day, jumping off a friend’s houseboat, eating at the lodge, sleeping up in the bow of Grandaddy’s boat. Those long summer days when there was nowhere else you needed to be.

Not long afterward, I spent a day in the studio experimenting with paint, working back into an old discard on handmade paper, and trying a new glazing medium. This little painting emerged.

I hadn’t set out to paint those memories, but something about its warm sky, deep green water, and weathered layers feels connected to them. I’m calling it Summers at Pickwick.

It’s been a difficult week, and it felt good to be in the studio. Maybe that’s one of the gifts of making things: sometimes we don’t have to know what we’re looking for. We just have to show up and see what finds us.
